All About our City, "Ushuaia, end of the world, beginning of everything"

Visiting Ushuaia sounds exciting…but what’s it all about?
You will come across the expression "el fin del mundo" - in English "the end of the world" - everywhere in Ushuaia.
Probably this term is based on the fact that Ushuaia is the southernmost city in the world - apart from smaller towns such as Puerto Williams in Chile which do not have the status of a city, but still, they are further south than Ushuaia.
Possibly the phrase "el fin del mundo" implies the end of civilization in the southern hemisphere, because everything that comes after it are the broad expanses of the ocean and vastness of ice and snow.

And after returning from a trip to Ushuaia you can indeed proudly tell that you’ve been to the southernmost city in the World, which is quite a nice extra feature of the trip.
Ushuaia is located on the island of Tierra del Fuego, which is separated from South America’s mainland by the Strait of Magellan.
The city is especially popular with cruise and expedition ships as a stopover or starting point before continuing their journey to Antarctica. Also its proximity to the Parque Nacional del Tierra del Fuego (Tierra del Fuego National Park) attracts tourists from all over the world.

Today there is only one living full-blood Yagan left - Cristina Calderón born in 1928, who is the only remaining person speaking the language of Tierra del Fuego’s native inhabitants. Cristina Calderón published together with her sister and granddaughter a book with stories about the Yagan entitled "Hai kur mamasu shis - I want to tell you a story".
